“The Cave Monastery Complex”

UNESCO World Heritage siteRecognizable architectural landmark

Founded in 1051, the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra is a preeminent center of Eastern Orthodox Christianity and a cornerstone of Kyivan Rus history. Students of theology and history will marvel at the extensive network of catacombs holding mummified monks and ancient religious relics. Its stunning golden-domed churches perfectly exemplify Ukrainian Baroque architecture. The best season to visit is spring, when the monastery's hillside gardens are in full bloom. Tourist tip: Dress modestly (women should carry a headscarf, and men should wear long pants) and be prepared for steep walks between the Upper and Lower Lavra.
