“Ancient Siamese Capital”

UNESCO World Heritage siteArchaeological site

Once the largest city in the world, Ayutthaya served as the second capital of the Siamese Kingdom from 1350 until its destruction by the Burmese in 1767. For history and architecture students, its towering reliquary stupas (prangs) and massive monasteries offer a profound look into early urban planning and Southeast Asian trade networks. The best time to visit is during the cool, dry season from November to February. Tourist tip: Rent a bicycle to navigate the expansive historical park at your own pace, and do not miss the iconic Buddha head entwined in the roots of a Bodhi tree at Wat Mahathat.
