“Dutch Colonial Stronghold”

Archaeological siteHistoric facades

Located on Fort Island in the Essequibo River, Fort Zeelandia was built in 1743 and remains one of the oldest standing structures in Guyana. It is a critical site for history students studying European colonial expansion and the Dutch West India Company's influence in South America. The adjacent Court of Policy building once served as the seat of the Dutch government and now houses a small museum. The best time to visit is during the dry seasons (February to April or August to November) to ensure smooth river navigation. Tourist tip: Hire a local guide in Parika for the boat ride to fully appreciate the river's history.
